Day 12

Day 12 - Even superheroes have to do the paperwork!

English:

Today is was clearly not a good day to be outside as the grey clouds redeemed the sky and gave Sunnyvale a lesson about how to Cloudyvale. I guess it isn't always sunny in California; but it was OK, since it gave us the perfect opportunity to catch up on all of our school work for this trip. Miriam went over all the Blog posts and corrected them, while Ana took care that the photos have good resolution and are as representative as possible, Bogdan went over the technical code stuff, the other boys, together with Dana and Bea had arranged the interviews and other details of the trip. 

Finally, when we were all done with this, we rapped up with individual essays of minimum of 500 words regarding our thoughts and experiences of the trip and what we have learned and assimilated.

After all this tiring work, we went to the gym in order to blow some steam; Dana and Miriam tried a new sports technique called Tae Bo. It was exhausting even to look at them. Later on, when they were done with the exercises, the girls went to the pool to cool down and the boys joined the fun. It was a crazy day, but hey! - even superheroes have to do the paperwork!

Romana:

Azi, evident nu a fost o zi bună de a merge afară deoarece nori suri au revendicat cerul și au dat o lecție Văii de Soare (Sunnyvale) despre cum să fie Valea Înnorată (Coudyvale). Cred că nu este întodeauna soare în California; dar a fost în regulă deoarece ne-a oferit șansa perfectă de a termina cu munca de școală legată de excursie. Miriam a revizuit postările de pe Blog, în timp ce Anaa avut grijă ca toate pozele să aibă rezoluția bună și să fie cât mai reprezentative, Bogdan a revizuit detaliile tehnice codate, iar ceilalți băieți, împreună cu Dana și Bea, au aranjat interviurile și toate celălalte detalii despre excursie.

Într-un final, când am terminat cu toată munca, am încheiat cu scrierea individuală a câte un eseu de minim 500 de cuvinte în legătură  cu gândurile și experiențele noastre din excursie și ceea ce am învățat și am asimilat. După toată această muncă obositoare, am mers la sală pentru a ne calma; Dana și Miriasm au încercat un nou tip de sport numit Tae Bo. A fost extenuant să ne și uitam la ele. Mai încolo, când au terminat cu exercițiile, fetele au mers la psicină ca să se răcorească, iar băieții s-au alăturat distracției. A fost o zi nebună, dar hey! - chiar și supereroii trebuie să completeze hârtiile.

Day 11

Day 11 - I escaped from Alcatraz and swum all the way to Pier 39, where I found out about Facebook

English:

Today was one of those days when we hurried to the car in order to get to the destination as soon as possible. Even though almost everyone slept on the way there, after they woke up they were all excited about the first stop which was the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco). As we walked on this illustrious architectural monument and watched the city skyline while the wind was blowing violently from all the directions, we all felt the vibe of the city touching our hearts - the American Dream! 

The moment had come to an end as we had to hurry to our next destination on the map, maybe the most awaited one by most of us: ALCATRAZ. 

Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California,United States. Often referred to as "The Rock," the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963. Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of Aboriginal Peoples from San Francisco who were part of a wave of Native activism across the nation with public protests through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Today, the island's facilities are managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; it is open to tours.

We were able to wonder around the prison that was the nightmare of the worst people, such as Al "Scarface" Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz), George "Machine Gun" Kelly  and many others. It was astonishing to see so much history and evil all gathered in one place, a place later filled with some hope from the Native Americans who claimed their rights.

Later on, when we returned to the city, we hurried to Pier 39 where we were about to meet Cristina Scheau at Hard Rock Cafe. Cristina started to work full-time at Facebook after she finished her intern ship programme and projects there (for 3 months). She couldn't tell us much about her work there, due to the non/disclosure policy, but what she could answer she did.

Romana:

Azi a fost una dintre acele zile în care ne-am grăbit la mașină pentru a ajunge cât mai repede la destinație. Deși mulți dintre noi am adormit pe mașină , am fost foarte bucuroși să ne trezim odată ajunși la prima oprire care a fost Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco).  Așa cum ne plimbam pe acest ilustru  monument arhitectural și priveam linia d orizont a orașului în timp ce vântul sufla violent din toate direcțiile, am simțit atmosfera orașului atingândune inimile - Visul American!

Momentul a venit când a trebuit să ne grăbim către următoarea noastră destinație de pe hartă, poate cea mai așteptată dintre toate pentru majoritatea dintre noi: ALCATRAZ.

Insula Alcatraz este localizată în golful San Francisco, la 1.5 mile (2.4 km) de de la malul San Francisco-ului, California, Statele Unite. Foarte des denumit "Piatra", insula micuîă s-a dezvoltat cprin facilitățile farului, fortificării militare, închisorii militare (1868), și a închisoriii federale din 1933 până în 1963. La începutul unii Noiembrie 1969, insula a fost ocupată pentru mai mult de 19 luni de un grup de oameni Aborigeni din San Francisco care erau parte dintr-un val de activism Nativ American din toata națiunea cu publicul care a protestat prin ani 1970. În 1972, , Alcatraz a devenit uo arie națională recreațională și a primit designația de Monument Istoric Natural în 1986. Azi, facilitățile insulei sunt  gestionate de Servicul Parcului Național al Arie de Recreație Golden Gate; este deschisa pentru tururi.

Am avut posibilitatea să ne plimbăm prin închisoarea care a fost coșmarul a celor mai groaznici oameni, ca și Al "Cicatrice" Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (Pasărea Alcatrazului), George "Mitralieră" Kelly și multi alții. A fost uimitor să vedem atâta istorie și atâta rău adunate într-un singur loc, un loc care mai târziu a fost revendicat de către Americanii Nativi, oameni ce au adus insulei puțină speranță.

Mai târziu, când ne-am întors în oraș, ne-am grăbit la Docul 39 unde aveam să ne întâlnim cu Cristina Scheau la Hard Rock Cafe. Cristina a început să lucreze cu normă întreagă la Facebook după ce și-a terminat programul și proiectul de stagiar acolo (timp de 3 luni). Nu a putut să ne spună multe despre munca ei acolo datorită politicii de non-divulgare, dar ne-a răspuns la ceea ce avea voie.

   

Day 10

Day 10 - Microsoft, StartX + Knotch and Stanford

English:

Today we started by visiting Microsoft, where we were waited with a warm "Happy Friday!" welcome and our visit announcement on the screens throughout the building. After the conference room was set up, we were invited in and two Microsoft employees presented us their jobs and more about the company. Miss Thea told us more about the charity and giving side of the business, while Mr. Kenny talked us through the process he went through and how awesome it is to work at this company - there are many opportunities and they truly care about you!

We then went on to StartX and Knotch; Knotch is actually a business ran by Miss Anda Gansca, a girl from Cluj with a very inspirational story - as she is described on the Knotch website: The Queen Bee. Anda is an opinionated writer on a mission to make her opinions matter. Before taking on this big mission and starting Knotch, she started three non-profit initiatives, worked in venture capital, and studied economics & international relations at Stanford; she started a small company with the vision that people could meet and socialize based on their common interests and by rating different topics based on the degree of interest (Red = Hot, Blue = Not). She gave us the same advice as Mr Gabriel Marcu, to step up and leave behind the judgemental nature and all the oppinions that others might have about us - the true powers lies within yourself.

After all of these, we relaxed while walking on the grounds of the Stanford University, one of the best universities worldwide! It was a breathtaking experience that we will embrace and try to assimilate it on the ground of Romania. It kind of reminded us of how much our school has accomplished in these 20 years, and how much it still will in the following.

Romana:

Azi ne-am inceput ziua prin a visita Microsoft, unde am fost asteptati cu o urare calduroada de "Vineri Fericita" si un anunt al vizitei noastre pe ecranele din toat cladirea. Dupa ce sala de conferinte a fost aranjata, am fost invitati inauntru si doi angajati ai Microsoft ne-au prezentat aria lor de munca si ne-au spus mai multe despre companie. D-soara. Thea ne-a spus mai multe despre partea caritabilasi care da a companiei, in timp ce D-l. Kenny ne-a vorbit despre procesul prin care el a trecut si de ce este grozav sa lucrezi la aceasta companie - exista multe oportunitati si lor le pasa cu adevarat de tine!

Am mers mai departe la StartX si Notch; Notch, defapt, este o afacere condusa de o fata, Anda, din Romania care are viziunea ca utilizatorii sa intalneasca noi persoane bazat pe interesele lor comune. Ea chiar ne-a dat sperante noi in privinta antreprenoriatului. Multumim, Anda!

Apoi am mers la StartX și Knotch; Knotch este de fapt o companie condusă de D+șoara. Anda Gânscă, o fată din Cluj cu o poveste foarte inspirațională - pe site-ul web Knotch ea este descrisă în felul următor: Regina Albină. Anda este o scriitoare opinionată cu o misiune de a face opiniile să conteze. Înainte de alua această responsailitate și a începe Knotch, ea a avut trei inițiative non-profit, a lucrat în capitalul de risc și a studiat economie și relații internaționale la Stanford; a început o companie cu o viziune a oamenilor care pot socializa și întâlni pe baza intereselor comune și prin a nota diferite teme bazat pe un gradient al culorii de interes (Roșu = Foarte tare, Albastru = Deloc). Ne-a dat același sfat ca și D-l. Gabriel Marcu, să facem un pas înainte și să lăsăm în spate natura plină de prejudecări, împreună cu toate opiniile care alții le-ar putea avea despre noi - adevărata putere zace în tine.

Dupa toate acestea, ne-am relaxat intr-o plimbare prin campusul Universitatii Stanford, una dintre universitatile de top din toata lumea! A fost o experienta incredibila pe care o vom adopta si vom incerca sa o introducem solurile din Romania. Ne-a adus aminte de școala noastră și de câte lucruri a realizat în acești 20 de ani, și câte mai are de realizat în următorii.
